Enjoy a day out with an English gentleman as your host

Liberty Car Tours specialises in providing overseas visitors (and locals) with bespoke days out in the beautiful English countryside and will pick you up from hotels, B&Bs, or private homes in London, Bath or other west country locations. Spend a day in safe hands and comfort with Liberty Car Tour’s experienced driver and host, Mike Lane, who will take the strain of driving while he tells you all about your chosen destinations, their background and history, before dropping you off at the most convenient place and being on hand when you return.

You can explore the Cotswolds, visiting picturesque villages, eating lunch at an ancient inn or taking afternoon tea in a pretty tea room. You may prefer to visit the ancient Avebury and Stonehenge, Winchester (King Alfred’s capital), Salisbury with it’s wonderful cathedral and original copy of the Magna Carta, and the magnificent landscape garden of Stourhead. Visit the Somerset treasures of Wells Cathedral (dating back to 1175), and Glastonbury, the site of an abbey and reputed to be the place Joseph of Arimathea planted his staff giving the eternal thorn tree. Taste Somerset cider in a hidden village.

Enjoy being taken for a leisurely drive around the countryside and coasts of the West Country, with trips to the Jurassic coast in the south where you could take a walk and find a fossil, or the lovely north Somerset and Devon coast, with quaint villages like Porlock to explore. Before you venture further west, there are Dunster Castle, Barrington Court, Montacute House to explore as well as steam railways, tank museums and the Fleet Air Arm museum if you enjoy things mechanical.

If you require a little more assistance, and require a steadying hand, Mike will accompany you round any attractions.

Mike Lane of Liberty Car Tours works exclusively for his clients, and does get booked up quickly during the season. Please enquire well ahead of time to avoid disappointment. But always check for last minute availability too!

More about...

Mike is a host not a guide – the quintessentially English Host. He will be your friend and companion during your time together, looking after you every step of the way.

As part of your Liberty Car Tours trip Mike will:

  • Tell you about English history
  • Fill you in on life in Great Britain
  • Outline the background to the places you visit
  • Recommend great places for lunch or cream tea
  • Drop you off right outside the places you visit
  • Wait for you, or accompany you should you need assistance
  • Advise you on ideas for the rest of your holiday
  • Open doors or hold an umbrella and all the usual courtesies
  • Support you if you have mobility problems.

Whether it’s driving you safely or giving you a great day out, having a host like Mike will make your day very special. If you require the services of a specialist guide covering your interests, then Mike can arrange that for you.

Your journey will be in a luxurious Mercedes E class estate car with leather seats and plenty of space in the back for luggage.

The English Host will ensure there are courtesy items in the car including sweets, water, umbrellas, travel blankets, and information on the venue. If you have any special requests such as newspapers, preferred hot or cold drinks, snacks, and even a picnic please let us know.

Your host can arrange lunch, afternoon tea and dinner bookings for you or, if you’d prefer, a picnic packed into the car. Make the most of your time in England and let Liberty Car Tours take you to the best places in comfort and style.

The Mercedes E Class has plenty of room for two or three passengers, but can also take a fourth in the middle of the rear seats with slightly less room.

If you have mobility issues please see our Accessibility section below.

Please note that if you are less mobile, a collapsible mobility scooter or wheelchair will fit into the trunk of the car and Mike is an expert in making your trip accessible and enjoyable.

Liberty Car Tours can transport collapsible wheelchairs and mobility scooters, but unfortunately we don’t have a vehicle with a wheelchair lift at the moment. All clients should be able to, using help if necessary, get in or out of a roomy car. Smooth leather seats help the process, and a seat ‘turntable’ is available in the car as well as a spare walking stick. Just remember, you can take your time – speed is of no concern on a Liberty day out!

Please advise Mike of your specified requirements in advance, so he can make sure you are looked after.

While Liberty Car Tours cannot be responsible for the accessibility of the destinations you select, Mike is happy to discuss this with you and provide advice to ensure you have the best day out, without any obstacles or impediments.

Wiltshire Treasures Tour

Easily accessible from Bath, Wiltshire has some of the most remarkable sites in England, and Liberty Car Tours can take you to Stonehenge; the great cathedral at Salisbury; and the wonderful garden at Stourhead.

Stonehenge, built roughly 2,500 years ago, is now one of the most important sites in England, with ongoing archaeological work on the wider site revealing more prehistoric activity. Salisbury cathedral with its soaring spire, and beautiful surroundings is a must see. One of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta is to be seen in the Chapter House. The glorious landscape gardens of Stourhead, set around a lake, are a photographer’s paradise.

All three sites can be visited in a full day tour of approximately 8 hours. If you have less time, then choose one or two to visit in 5 hours.

There are lots more ancient heritage sites in the west country, so if there’s something you’d like to visit, just contact Mike to discuss your requirements. We can do half or full day tours.

A Day Out in Bath

If you are staying outside Bath, let Mike drive you there and show you around. Aside from being a stunningly beautiful city, Bath has many attractions to tempt and amuse you when you visit.

There are a number of museums: No. 1 Royal Crescent is a museum which has been decorated and furnished just as it might have been during the period 1776-1796; the Holburne Museum is a public art gallery, in a Grade I listed building, and home to fine and decorative arts built around the collection of Sir William Holburne; the American Museum is based at Claverton Manor in a house designed by Jeffry Wyatville (built c.1820) and filled with wonderful exhibits; the Fashion Museum is housed in the Assembly Rooms – the collection was started by Doris Langley Moore, who gave her collection to the city of Bath in 1963.

Why not visit the Bath Assembly Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769, a set of elegant Regency assembly rooms, or the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, commonly known as Bath Abbey, formerly a Benedictine monastery, or the Victoria Art Gallery which is a public art museum.

Bath also offers great shopping and when you weary of that, why not pop into the Thermae Bath Spa, a combination of the historic spa with it’s warm mineral pools and variety of pampering treatments before taking a drive around the Royal Crescent. Just let us know if you’d like a half or full day seeing Bath, and we can put together an itinerary.

Mike’s favourite: No.1 Royal Crescent, which takes you back in time to the Georgian era.

Tour price depends on pick up location and duration. Please contact us for quotation.

Somerset Treasures Tour

Described by the ancient Welsh Celts and the Saxons as the Land of the Summer People, Somerset is a county of captivating contrasts. Somerset is a county that has it all. Ranked seventh in the UK for size, it is far from being the most highly populated meaning there are vast expanses of open, unspoilt spaces waiting to be explored. What’s more, it boasts plenty of beautiful buildings – in cities, villages and bustling market towns – with a rich heritage of history and legend.

Visit the beautiful cathedral at Wells. Explore Glastonbury with its Abbey connected to King Arthur, ‘New-Age’ shops, and the mystical Tor. Sample cider at a traditional cider mill. Enjoy stunning scenery as you drive through the county. Visit the great houses of Montacute, Barrington Court or Lytes Cary.

Mike’s favourite: Wells Cathedral, my favourite cathedral in England. Combine it with the lovely gardens of the Bishop’s Palace next door (4 or 5 hours)

Explore quintessentially English villages of honey-coloured stone; take in splendid, lively market towns; visit some of the country’s greatest palaces, castles and country houses.

The famous towns of Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, and Chipping Camden are full of quaint shops set in a breath-taking setting. Let Mike drive you through quiet lanes to reach stunning villages like Bibury, Upper and Lower Slaughter, or Snowshill.

  • A Perfect day out! - “While staying in Bath, we booked a tour with Liberty Car Tours so we could manage to get out to see Wells Cathedral. Mike could not have been a better guide. He is very knowledgeable about the local area and provided interesting commentary along the way. He got us as close as possible to the Cathedral; important for my elderly father-in-law. He also suggested a quick side trip to Glastonbury Abbey as we would be very close. We went to see it as well, and were very glad we did. Mike was considerate, personable, courteous and a very safe driver. We had bottles of water waiting for each of us in the car, and he was ready with umbrellas at the Cathedral exit. Thanks Mike for a lovely day!”
