Enjoy a day out with an English gentleman as your host

Liberty Car Tours offers a unique experience for the discerning traveller; car tours from Bath, Salisbury and other West Country locations, with an English gentleman as your host and guide. Mike Lane, your host, has extensive knowledge of the west of England and will tailor a bespoke day for you. Tours can include luncheon bookings and afternoon tea, and Mike will take you around attractions if you prefer.

We provide a link between London, Bath and Salisbury – the tourist route known as the Great West Way. Mike is a founder ambassador for the Great West Way tourist initiative recently set up by government and can provide one day or multi-day tours along the route. At one end you have London, the ideal entry point with its world-renowned royal sights and rich cultural heritage. Then at the other, Bath and Bristol. Close neighbours geographically, but with distinct personalities. While Bath is loved for its classical Georgian architecture and romantic literary connections, Bristol is a riot of alternative art, music and dining experiences, famous for nurturing pioneering spirits Brunel and Banksy. In between lie relaxing riverside towns like Henley-on-Thames, characterful villages like Pewsey and plenty of lush, green landscapes.

Attractions include tours of the beautiful Cotswold villages, a day touring the historic sites in Bath, Wells with its glorious cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, The ancient monuments of Wiltshire, Stonehenge and Avebury, where you’ll find a delightful pub in the middle of the vast stone circle, or scenic Shaftesbury and the magnificent cathedral at Salisbury. With so many possibilities, why not speak to Mike who will be happy to suggest an itinerary.

Mike has an extensive knowledge of London and can give visitors an overview of the capital city before driving you to Bath, Salisbury or other locations in the West Country. Of course, this service works both ways, and includes pick up and drop off at airports or seaports.

Your tour will be in a comfortable Mercedes E class estate car and you’ll find sweets, water, umbrellas, travel blankets, a spare walking stick, a seat ‘turntable’ and information on your chosen venues in the car. You can ask for newspapers, hot and cold drinks, snacks and a picnic if you desire. The car has plenty of room for three passengers but can accommodate a fourth in the middle of the rear seat with slightly less room for the other rear passengers.

Liberty Car Tours is proud to offer an accessible service, with space in the trunk for a collapsible wheelchair or mobility scooter, but unfortunately, we don’t have a vehicle with a wheelchair lift at the moment. Mike is experienced in making days out easy and comfortable for people with mobility issues and other disabilities and will offer a helping hand where necessary.

Liberty Car Tours is a member of Visit Bath, the Event Organisers Network and is an Ambassador for the Great West Way tourist route.

Mike Lane of Liberty Car Tours works exclusively for his clients and does get booked up quickly during the season. Please enquire well ahead of time to avoid disappointment. But always check for last minute availability too!

Wiltshire Treasures Tour

Easily accessible from Bath, Wiltshire has some of the most remarkable sites in England, and Liberty Car Tours can take you to Stonehenge; the great cathedral at Salisbury; and the wonderful garden at Stourhead.

Stonehenge, built roughly 2,500 years ago, is now one of the most important sites in England, with ongoing archaeological work on the wider site revealing more prehistoric activity. Salisbury cathedral with its soaring spire, and beautiful surroundings is a must see. One of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta is to be seen in the Chapter House. The glorious landscape gardens of Stourhead, set around a lake, are a photographer’s paradise.

All three sites can be visited in a full day tour of approximately 8 hours. If you have less time, then choose one or two to visit in 5 hours.

There are lots more ancient heritage sites in the west country, so if there’s something you’d like to visit, just contact Mike to discuss your requirements. We can do half or full day tours.

Mike’s favourites: If you have not been there, Stonehenge is a must, perhaps followed by the magnificence of Salisbury Cathedral or the grand landscape garden at Stourhead.

Somerset Treasures Tour

Described by the ancient Welsh Celts and the Saxons as the Land of the Summer People, Somerset is a county of captivating contrasts. Somerset is a county that has it all. Ranked seventh in the UK for size, it is far from being the most highly populated meaning there are vast expanses of open, unspoilt spaces waiting to be explored. What’s more, it boasts plenty of beautiful buildings – in cities, villages and bustling market towns – with a rich heritage of history and legend.

Visit the beautiful cathedral at Wells. Explore Glastonbury with its Abbey connected to King Arthur, ‘New-Age’ shops, and the mystical Tor. Sample cider at a traditional cider mill. Enjoy stunning scenery as you drive through the county. Visit the great houses of Montacute, Barrington Court or Lytes Cary.

Mike’s favourite: Wells Cathedral, my favourite cathedral in England. Combine it with the lovely gardens of the Bishop’s Palace next door (4 or 5 hours)

Quick visit to Wells Cathedral on it’s own (Approx. 4 hours) £240
Half Day Tours (Approx. 6 hours) £330
Full Day Tours (Approx. 8 hours) £390 (Example itinerary – Wells and Glastonbury with Stonehenge or Salisbury)

The Glorious Cotswolds With Liberty Car Tours

Explore quintessentially English villages of honey-coloured stone; take in splendid, lively market towns; visit some of the country’s greatest palaces, castles and country houses.

You may choose to wander around Cotswolds gardens, through acres of parkland at one of the Cotswold stone historic houses, or down a glorious avenue of trees, at one of the Cotswolds two arboreta.

The famous towns of Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford, and Chipping Camden are full of quaint shops set in a breath-taking setting. Let Mike drive you through quiet lanes to reach stunning villages like Bibury, Upper and Lower Slaughter, or Snowshill.

Drive a bit, stop to admire the view, drive a bit more, stop for lunch or cream tea, do some shopping – a day out in the Cotswolds is one of England’s ‘must-do’ experiences.

Mike’s favourite: My ‘hidden village’ drive off the tourist route, taking in lunch at a beautiful inn, and ending up at the glorious village of Bibury (where there are tourists!)

This is a Full Day Tour (Approx. 8-9 hours) £460. We always suggest a full day to get to the Cotswolds, and enjoy everything it has to offer, but if you wish to take less time, contact us for a quote. We always try and accommodate your wishes!

A Day Out in Bath

If you are staying outside Bath, let Mike drive you there and show you around. Aside from being a stunningly beautiful city, Bath has many attractions to tempt and amuse you when you visit.

There are a number of museums: No. 1 Royal Crescent is a museum which has been decorated and furnished just as it might have been during the period 1776-1796; the Holburne Museum is a public art gallery, in a Grade I listed building, and home to fine and decorative arts built around the collection of Sir William Holburne; the American Museum is based at Claverton Manor in a house designed by Jeffry Wyatville (built c.1820) and filled with wonderful exhibits; the Fashion Museum is housed in the Assembly Rooms – the collection was started by Doris Langley Moore, who gave her collection to the city of Bath in 1963.

Why not visit the Bath Assembly Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769, a set of elegant Regency assembly rooms, or the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, commonly known as Bath Abbey, formerly a Benedictine monastery, or the Victoria Art Gallery which is a public art museum.

Bath also offers great shopping and when you weary of that, why not pop into the Thermae Bath Spa, a combination of the historic spa with it’s warm mineral pools and variety of pampering treatments before taking a drive around the Royal Crescent. Just let us know if you’d like a half or full day seeing Bath, and we can put together an itinerary.

Mike’s favourite: No.1 Royal Crescent, which takes you back in time to the Georgian era.

Tour price depends on pick up location and duration. Please contact us for quotation.

Your link between London and the West Country

In between lie relaxing riverside towns like Henley-on-Thames, characterful villages like Castle Combe and plenty of lush, green landscapes.

These places are all intrinsically linked, and well worth visiting in their own right, but the Great West Way offers more than getting from A to B…

It’s for slow travellers just as interested in the journey, and the colourful characters encountered along the way. And the big adventures that lead to unexpected diversions. The long-awaited pilgrimage to Stonehenge, perhaps, that leads to the secret stones of Avebury and 4,000 years of history you never knew existed. It’s about saying yes to new experiences and delighting in smaller, simple, special things – as well as the superlatives.

Now is the time to go in search of the real England. After all, you never quite know what awaits the curious around the next corner. Discover your way with Liberty Car Tours.

Liberty Car Tours can transport collapsible wheelchairs and mobility scooters, but unfortunately we don’t have a vehicle with a wheelchair lift at the moment. All clients should be able to, using help if necessary, get in or out of a roomy car. Smooth leather seats help the process, and a seat ‘turntable’ is available in the car as well as a spare walking stick. Just remember, you can take your time – speed is of no concern on a Liberty day out!

While Liberty Car Tours cannot be responsible for the accessibility of the destinations you select, Mike is happy to discuss this with you and provide advice to ensure you have the best day out, without any obstacles or impediments.

Everything, from Heathrow pick up, to daily pickups in Bath, visits to gardens and country homes, or finding the right pub for lunch was handled with courtesy, professionalism and efficiency. • A Perfect day out! - “While staying in Bath, we booked a tour with Liberty Car Tours so we could manage to get out to see Wells Cathedral. Mike could not have been a better guide. He is very knowledgeable about the local area and provided interesting commentary along the way. He got us as close as possible to the Cathedral; important for my elderly father-in-law. He also suggested a quick side trip to Glastonbury Abbey as we would be very close. We went to see it as well, and were very glad we did. Mike was considerate, personable, courteous and a very safe driver. We had bottles of water waiting for each of us in the car, and he was ready with umbrellas at the Cathedral exit. Thanks Mike for a lovely day!”
